What is 3D & 2D design?

3D (three-dimensional) and 2D (two-dimensional) design are different techniques used in describing the shape and form of objects.

  • In 2D design, the two dimensions are length and height. This produces a flat image or drawing of the object. 2D design is the most common design approach, used in the development of countless logos, illustrations and typography for digital and print formats.
  • 3D design involves designing in three-dimensional space, where the addition of depth (true depth, not merely the perception of depth) allows objects to be represented as solid forms that can be rotated and viewed from any angle.

While 2D design has its roots in prehistoric cave painting, and 3D design in early pottery sculpture, both are now dominated by the use of software.

At Celf, we produce both 2D and 3D designs such as product prototypes, architectural visualisations, and medical CGI, and animate them for a range of marketing and communications applications

What are the benefits of 2D and 3D design?

2D and 3D design both have unique benefits and advantages, depending on the specific budgetary and project requirements.

For instance, 2D design is typically faster to produce and more versatile in how it can be applied to different media. 3D design, on the other hand, is not limited to creating flat images but complex shapes and structures, providing a more accurate and detailed representation of real-world objects. In addition, 3D design allows for the manipulation of objects in three dimensions, supporting a more immersive and interactive experience.
